Recently, rumors have surfaced that Rasheed Wallace is likely to re-sign with the Celtics for the remainder of the 2010-2011 NBA season. The cause for most of this speculation are reports about recent sightings of Rasheed at Celtics practices and team events; it should also be noted that Wallace looks in shape to play half a season of Celtics Basketball. But would his return be good for this focused Boston Celtics team? The answer is yes. With the addition of Wallace the Boston Celtics, depth would grow and give the Celtics another big man who can score with his back to the basket and stretch the floor. We all know what Rasheed is capable of, but it is a matter of which Rasheed Wallace will show up to play. This defensive minded Boston Celtics team will need the Rasheed in the playoffs and not the unknown who played sub-par defense in the 2009-2010 NBA regular season. Rumors that Rasheed Wallace would be returning to the Celtics have been going on since the game seven loss to the Lakers and since, he has announced his retirement. As the All-Star break approaches, the idea seems more realistic considering the history of Boston Celtics management and middle of the season signings in the recent years. The Celtics could use Rasheed as an alternative to Jermaine O’Neal, who has been injured for most of the season. O’Neal’s offensive game has and will suffer because of his injury. When the playoffs come around, O’Neal’s job will be to play defense and rebound off of the bench. With the addition of Rasheed, the Celtics would be able to play defense and rebound (on certain nights) and get off the bench post scoring on the offensive end. When Kendrick Perkins returns from injury the Celtics would have, Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins, Glen Davis, Shaquille O’Neal, Jermaine O’Neal, Semih Erden, and Rasheed Wallace at the power forward and center positions. Without Rasheed Wallace this is a talented front court, but with Rasheed Wallace, they are an even more talented front court offensively and defensively who get different types of production from each player. Half a year removed from basketball, with a bad taste in his mouth, ‘Sheed should be well rested and in enough shape to be ready to help the Celtics win the NBA championship and raise banner number 18.
